Details
Marcel Bonin had his only full season with the Detroit Red Wings in 1954-55, missing just one of the team’s 70 regular season games. He contributed 16 goals and 20 assists for 36 points, sixth in scoring a Red Wings team full of offensive talent. He appeared in all eleven of Detroit’s post season games, helping the Wings capture the Stanley Cup championship, beating the Montreal Canadiens in the final.
Despite this success, Bonin found himself with the Boston Bruins in 1955-56 and demoted to the Quebec Aces in the QHL for the full 1956-57 season. With the A’s, he helped that team capture the title with 14 points in ten games. He led the league with 60 assists, 19 more than the next in line. In overall scoring, his 80 points were just one behind leader and teammate Orval Tessier.
Bonin joined the Montreal Canadiens and had five decent years, winning three Stanley Cup rings with the Habs. In 1958-59, his ten goals in eleven playoff games led the league. Three of those ten were game winners, including the game 5 Cup clinching game in the final against the Toronto Maple Leafs. If the Conn Smythe Trophy existed at the time, Marcel would have been a top contender, along with Jacques Plante, Dickie Moore and Doug Harvey.
Between 1952-53 and 1961-62, Marcel Bonin played 454 regular season and 50 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Red Wings, Bruins and Canadiens.
