Card Notes
One of the many bright, young prospects the Canadiens have brought up in recent years, Larry was obtained in the 1971 amateur draft. He played half of the 1972-73 season for Montreal, and also saw considerable action in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He’s a good skater, and likes to throw his weight around when necessary. Good prospect for stardom.
Details
After being called up from the Nova Scotia Voyageurs midway through the 1972-73 season, Larry Robinson was in the NHL to stay. In the AHL in 1971-72, he helped the Voyageurs to a Calder Cup championship, taking out the Baltimore Clippers in the final.
Originally, Larry was a second round pick by the Habs at the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft. He’d played just a single season of Major Junior hockey with the Kitchener Rangers before getting drafted. He was fifth on the 1970-71 Rangers team, led in scoring by fellow future Hockey Hall of Fame member Bill Barber.
Robinson arrived in Montreal in time to capture his first of six Stanley Cup championships. It also marked the first of 20 consecutive seasons that Larry played in the NHL post season. He would win the Conn Smythe Trophy with the Canadiens in 1977-78. Robinson also won a Stanley Cup in 1999-00 as head coach of the New Jersey Devils.
Between 1972-73 and 1991-92, Larry Robinson appeared in 1,384 regular season and 227 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens and Los Angeles Kings. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1995 and his jersey number 19 was retired by the Habs in 2007.
