Larry has good size and strength. He’s a superb skater and can handle the puck well. Larry has been used on the point on the power play and was credited with 5 power play goals for the Kings in 1980-81. He plays with poise and confidence on the ice. Larry set NHL records with 60 assists and 76 points by a rookie defenseman in 1980-81.

Larry Murphy still owns the record for most assists in a season by a rookie defenseman with 60. The closest competitor is Chris Chelios with 55 in 1984-85. The points record still stands, as well. Brian Leetch had 71 in 1988-89 and is as close as anyone has come to equaling Murphy’s mark. It should be noted, though, that Leetch only played 68 games that year while Larry had the benefit of a full 80 game schedule.
Despite writing his name in the NHL record books with seemingly permanent ink, Murphy finished a distant second in the voting for the Calder Trophy in 1980-81 behind Peter Stastny of the Quebec Nordiques.
The Los Angeles Kings selected Larry fourth overall at the 1980 NHL Entry Draft behind Doug Wickenheiser, Dave Babych and Denis Savard. Of the nine players from that draft to surpass 1,000 games in the NHL, none played as many as Murphy. Larry finished his career with 1,615 regular season games played, placing him 12th all-time, just three more than Ray Bourque.
Between 1980-81 and 2000-01, Larry Murphy also played 215 playoff games in the National Hockey League, winning four Stanley Cup championships, two with the Pittsburgh Penguins and two with the Detroit Red Wings. Along with the Kings, Penguins and Red Wings, Larry also played for the Washington Capitals, Minnesota North Stars and Toronto Maple Leafs. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004.
