Details

A look at the trivia snippet: The Calgary Flames rookie record mentioned on the back of the card occurred when the franchise was still in Atlanta. The mark has since been broken and Tom Lysiak’s 64 points in 1973-74 now place him sixth all-time, tied with Johnny Gaudreau. The current Flames record for most points by a rookie belongs to Joe Nieuwendyk and his 92 in 1987-88.

1982-83 was Lanny McDonald’s first full season with Calgary. He had come over from the Colorado Rockies in a November 25, 1981 trade for Don Lever and Bob MacMillan. It would be a big year with Lanny setting the current franchise record with 66 goals. This was good for second place in the NHL, five goals off leader Wayne Gretzky.

Despite being a career 500 goal scorer, 1982-83 was the only time McDonald surpassed the 50 goal plateau. He topped 40 five times, three times in consecutive seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, once in his split year between the Leafs and Rockies and once in his 1981-82 campaign split between the Rockies and Flames.

Between 1973-74 and 1988-89, Lanny McDonald appeared in 1,111 regular season and 117 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies and Calgary Flames. He was a Stanley Cup champion with the Flames in his final season and went to the final with the club in 1985-86. Lanny was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992.
