Keith had a nine game try-out with Montreal in 1964-65 but got his break when Pittsburgh entered NHL in 1967. Starting his fourth season with the Penguins, Keith is one of the league’s best forecheckers.

Keith McCreary did have a nine game stint with the Montreal Canadiens in 1964-65 but that was not his first NHL action. McCreary appeared in a single playoff game with the Habs in 1961-62. The game was a 5-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks and Keith a single shot on Chicago goalie Glenn Hall.

McCreary was a veteran of two NHL expansion drafts. The Pittsburgh Penguins picked him up from the Montreal organization at the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft in the ninth round, 52nd overall. At the 1972 expansion draft, Keith was the ninth player selected by the Atlanta Flames, 18th overall.

His first NHL career goal came in his eleventh game with the Penguins. On November 1, 1967 in a 4-1 road win over the Minnesota North Stars, McCreary scored at 18:01 of the first period on Garry Bauman, assisted by Val Fonteyne. The goal made the score 2-0 Pittsburgh and would stand as the game winner.

Between 1961-62 and 1974-75, Keith McCreary played 532 regular season and 16 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins and Atlanta Flames. He had three seasons with 20 or more goals, topping out with a career best 25 with the Penguins in 1968-69.
