Details
After playing most of that 1976-77 season with the Maple Ridge Bruins of the BCJHL, John Ogrodnick joined the WHL’s New Westminster Bruins for 14 games and played a role in helping the team to, not only a league championship, but a Memorial Cup championship.
In his first full season with New Westminster, 1977-78, John exploded for 59 goals in 72 games. That placed him eighth in the high scoring league for goal scoring and helped him earn the Jim Piggott Trophy as rookie of the year. The Bruins would once again win the Memorial Cup with the help of Ogrodnick, Ryan Walter and Stan Smyl.
John would go on to play 928 regular season and 41 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1979-80 and 1992-93 with the Detroit Red Wings, Quebec Nordiques and New York Rangers. His best season was 1984-85 with the Red Wings when he scored 55 goals and totaled 105 points.
Trivia Snippet
The Detroit Red Wings still hold the NHL record for most consecutive goals by a team in a game. On January 23, 1944, Detroit hosted the New York Rangers at the Olympia. The score ended up 15-0 as the Red Wings pummeled their guests.
Syd Howe was the only player to get a hat trick in the game. Four players had five point nights: Howe, Murray Armstrong, Joe Carveth and Don Grosso. Ken McAuley was between the pipes for the Rangers that night. He played all 50 games for the Blue Shirts that 1943-44 season, posting a dreadful 6.24 goals against average.
On three occasions, an NHL team has scored 13 consecutive goals in a game. Interestingly, Detroit is on the opposite end of one of those games. On January 2, 1971, the Red Wings fell 13-0 to the Toronto Maple Leafs at Maple Leaf Gardens. Don McLeod and Jim Rutherford shared the abuse in the Detroit nets, facing a total of 49 shots.
