Not necessarily an ERROR, Parkhurst butchered this 1963-64 John Ferguson rookie card. His head has been pasted onto the body of Claude Provost and the signature at the bottom of the card is definitely not his and possibly did not come from any NHL player at the time.

John Ferguson was picked up by the Montreal Canadiens as an enforcer to give some protection to Jean Beliveau. However, the big lad from Vancouver had a bit of an offensive touch, as well. In fact, he scored two goals and added an assist in his first NHL game.

The scoring ability shone through in 1962-63 with the Cleveland Barons in the American Hockey League. Ferguson’s 38 goals tied him for third in the league, just four goals behind leader and teammate Hank Ciesla. On the other side of his game, John was second with 179 penalty minutes, 17 PIM shy of leader Ed Van Impe.

In an NHL career that saw him sit 1,214 minutes in 500 games, Ferguson contributed a respectable 303 points. He was a 20 goal scorer twice with his career best coming in 1968-69 when he scored 29. That year, his career high 185 penalty minutes placed him third in the NHL behind Forbes Kennedy and Jim Dorey.

Between 1963-64 and 1970-71, John Ferguson appeared in 500 regular season and 85 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Montreal Canadiens. He was a member of five Stanley Cup championship teams with the Habs.
