“Beaver” played forward in junior hockey, but made the difficult switch to defense. Joe broke in with Boston and the Bruins bemoaned losing him to Philly. He’s not the spectacular type but very consistent. At Boston, Joe’s rookie year was overshadowed by Bobby Orr.

At the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft, Joe Watson was taken from the Boston Bruins by the Philadelphia Flyers in the fourth round, 21st overall. With the Bruins in 1966-67, Watson finished fourth in voting for the Calder Trophy a great distance behind Bobby Orr with Ed Van Impe in second and Brian Conacher in third.

In his first year with Philadelphia, the stay-at-home defenseman scored five goals. His career high would be six in 1974-75. One of those 1967-68 goals was a game winner in a 2-0 win over the Minnesota North Stars on March 10, 1968 at the Spectrum. Watson scored his fifth of the season at 1:31 of the third period, assisted by Andre Lacroix.

He also scored his first of just three career playoff goals that year. In game 3 of their quarter-final series against the St. Louis Blues, Joe scored at 13:54 of the third period on Glenn Hall to tie the game at 2-2 and force overtime. The Blues eventually won the game with Larry Keenan scoring on Bernie Parent at 4:10 of the second overtime. Parent made 54 saves on 57 shots in the game.

Between 1964-65 and 1978-79, Joe Watson played 835 regular season and 84 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers and Colorado Rockies. He was a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Flyers.
