Details
Jim Schoenfeld was the fifth overall pick at the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft, and indeed the first defenseman selected. Ahead of him were Billy Harris, Jacques Richard, Don Lever and Steve Shutt. Schoenfeld was drafted out of the Niagara Falls Flyers in the OHA Junior A (OHL).
In his rookie 1972-73 NHL season, Schoenfeld showed what his role was as a defensive defenseman. He scored four goals over 66 games but was fourth in the voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year. Steve Vickers took the Calder honours that year with Bill Barber coming in second and Billy Harris third.
Between 1972-73 and 1984-85 Schoenfeld played 719 regular season and 75 Stanley Cup playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins. He was part of a December 2, 1981 blockbuster that also sent Danny Gare, Bob Sauve and Derek Smith to the Red Wings for Mike Foligno, Dale McCourt and Brent Peterson.
