Details
Glenn Hall had three consecutive shutouts for the Red Wings in 1955-56. However, it should be noted that Terry Sawchuk had three straight blanks for the Wings the year before Hall and Dolly Dolson had three in a row for the then named Detroit Cougars in 1929.
Something else of note about Jim Rutherford’s shutout streak, it was over a five game span. Jim shutout the Washington Capitals 4-0 on December 31, 1975 and the Toronto Maple Leafs 1-0 on January 3, 1976. However, Ed Giacomin started the next two games for the Wings, both 4-3 losses. Jim returned between the pipes on January 8, 1976 for a 5-0 win over the Minnesota North Stars.
Over those three games, he faced 23 shots against Washington, 28 against the Maple Leafs and just 14 against the North Stars. He only had one other shutout during the 1975-76 season, another 5-0 win over Minnesota, this time facing just 17 shots.
Between 1970-71 and 1982-83, the boy from Beeton, Ontario played in 457 regular season games in the National Hockey League but just eight in the playoffs. Besides the Red Wings, Jim Rutherford also played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs and Los Angeles Kings.
