Details
1977-78 would be the end of the line for the NHL career of Jim Lorentz. He played 70 regular season games for the Buffalo Sabres, scoring nine goals. This was his lowest single season total since his first full season in the league with the Boston Bruins in 1969-70.
His first NHL goal was his only goal in 1968-69, a season he played just eleven games for the Bruins. On March 2, 1969 at the Boston Garden, Lorentz scored 17:49 of the second period on Pittsburgh goalie Joe Daley, assisted by Bobby Orr and John McKenzie. It was the first of the game, a 4-0 win for the home team. Ed Johnston faced just 19 shots for the shutout.
Interestingly, a guy who had a thing for scoring game winners put his in his final GWG against the Bruins. On February 2, 1978 at the Aud in Buffalo, Lorentz scored 10:12 of the second on Gerry Cheevers, assisted by Gilbert Perreault and Jerry Korab. That goal made the score 2-1 in a 3-1 Sabres win.
Between 1968-69 and 1977-78, Jim Lorentz played 659 regular season and 54 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Bruins, St. Louis Blues, New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres. Prior to making the NHL, he was CHL rookie of the year in 1967-68 and league MVP in 1968-69, both with the Oklahoma City Blazers.
