Card Notes

“Le Gros Bill” as Jean is called by his French Canadian fans is perhaps one of the most “natural” hockey players to come along in years. As a Junior, he was widely sought after and in a three game NHL trial in the 1952-53 season, he scored 5 goals in three games – has been top goal scorer twice in his illustrious career.

Details

1970-71 was the final season in the NHL for Jean Beliveau and Le Gros Bill went out in style. Over 70 regular season games, he scored 25 goals and assisted on 51 for 76 points, leading the Habs in both assists and points. The assist total tied him for tenth in the NHL with Norm Ullman of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He tied for ninth in the race for the Art Ross Trophy with Dave Keon and Fred Stanfield.

In the 1970-71 Stanley Cup playoffs, Beliveau continued with the offense of a much younger man. In 20 games, he totaled 22 points with Montreal capturing the Stanley Cup championship, beating the Chicago Blackhawks in the final. For Jean, it was the tenth and final Cup win of his career.

Between 1950-51 and 1970-71, Jean Beliveau played in 1,125 regular season and 162 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Montreal Canadiens. The two time Hart Trophy winner and one time Art Ross Trophy recipient was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972. His jersey number 4 was retired by the Habs in 1971.
