Card Notes

Jean Beliveau arrived in the NHL with more publicity than any other player in history and immediately proved he was a “super star”. Jean’s seemingly effortless hockey and flawless playmaking has led Montreal to 8 Stanley Cup triumphs. Currently third in NHL all-time scoring.

Details

In 1950-51, while still a junior with the Quebec Citadelles, Jean Beliveau was brought up to the Montreal Canadiens for his first two NHL games. In the first, he was left off the scoresheet but in the second, a 4-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks at the Montreal Forum, he showed Canadiens fans the future.

Beliveau scored the first goal of the game, and the first of 507 in his NHL career, at 8:32 of the first period on Harry Lumley, assisted by Bernie Geoffrion and Hal Laycoe. In the second period, he assisted on Geoffrion’s game winning goal.

A slight ERROR on the back of this 1966-67 Topps card, at the time, Beliveau had seven Stanley Cup championships to his name and not the eight stated. In the end, Le Gros Bill would help the Habs to ten titles.

Today, Beliveau’s 507 regular season goals rank him 45th all-time. His 1,219 points rank him 46th, ten behind Norm Ullman and two ahead of Larry Murphy. Ullman played 285 more games than Jean and Murphy had the benefit of 490 more. Of course, all three are in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Between 1950-51 and 1970-71, Jean Beliveau played 1,125 regular season and 162 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Montreal Canadiens. In 1971, his jersey number 4 became just the second retired by the Habs after Maurice Richard. Beliveau was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.
