Details
During the 1964-65 NHL regular season, Jean Beliveau appeared in just 58 games for the Montreal Canadiens. He put up just 20 goals and 43 points, very low number for this perennial Art Ross Trophy contender.
However, when it came to the playoffs, Beliveau got hot just at the right time. Over 13 games, he scored eight and assisted on as many for 16 points. In the final series against the Chicago Blackhawks, Jean had a four point night on two goals and two assists in a game five 6-0 shutout. He scored the Stanley Cup winning goal in a 4-0 game seven win, adding an assist on the insurance goal by Dick Duff. It should be noted that Bobby Rousseau played a major role in the game with three assists.
Beliveau would indeed be named the first ever winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy for his success in the playoffs. It would be the last major individual award of his illustrious NHL career to go along with his one Art Ross Trophy and two Hart Trophy selections.
Between 1950-51 and 1970-71, Jean Beliveau appeared in 1,125 regular season and 162 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Montreal Canadiens. He didn’t put in a full regular season with the club until 1954-55. Beliveau was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972, skipping the three year waiting process.
