Card Notes
Only goalie in history to win the Vezina five successive years. Plante has had a sensational career in the NHL. He was a member of the First All-Star Team twice and a member of the Second Team three times. A colourful player he likes to play far out of his goal. Possessor of a great pair of hands he is at his best under pressure. He won the Vezina Trophy in 1955-56, 1956-57, 1957-58, 1958-59 and 1959-60.
Details
1960-61 would be the end of Jacque Plante’s five year reign on the Vezina Trophy. However, he would win the award twice more during his incredible career, 1961-62 with the Montreal Canadiens and 1968-69 with the St. Louis Blues (shared with Glenn Hall).
To date, Plante is the only National Hockey League goaltender to win the Vezina in five consecutive seasons. Ken Dryden of the Montreal Canadiens won the award in four straight years in the 1970’s. Dominik Hasek of the Buffalo Sabres won the award in six of eight seasons between 1993-94 and 2000-01 but not winning it in more than three consecutive years.
Jacques Plante would play in 837 regular season NHL games between 1952-53 and 1972-73 with the Canadiens, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1978.
