Card Notes
One of the main reasons for Canadiens’ popularity, both in Montreal and as heavy drawing cards in other NHL cities, is the colour of the club, as a team and individually. Perhaps the most controversial figure of all Canadiens is Jacques Plante, rapidly gaining recognition as the most unusual and most unpredictable goaltender of recent times. Perhaps the only thing certain about Plante is that you can never be certain what he’ll do next. Plante’s so-called “show-boating” has tended to cloud his exceptional skills.
Details
Parkhurst had a little attack on Jacques Plante on the back of this card but one thing that was certainly predictable about Plante at the time this hockey card was produced was that he was pretty much assured to win the Vezina Trophy. Between 1955-56 and 1959-60, Jacques won the award in five consecutive seasons. He would win it two more times over his career and remains the only player with his name on the trophy seven times.
Another certainty, as noted in the stats section on the back, is that Jacques Plante is more than likely going to stop your shot. After the 1957-58 NHL season, he had a 1.89 goals against average with 42 shutouts (these stats included playoffs). Some years later, he ended his NHL career with a 2.38 GAA and 82 shutouts over 837 regular season games. Over 112 playoff games, he put up a 2.12 GAA with 14 blanks.
Between 1952-53 and 1972-73, Jacques Plante played for the Habs, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins. He was the Hart Trophy winner in 1961-62 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1978.
