Card Notes

J.C.’s given name is Jean-Claude, but it’s seldom used. He was originally a forward who switched to defense in his last year junior hockey. J.C. uses his stick more than his body to break up rushes. Unlike some defensemen, J.C. is rarely tagged for many penalties.

J.C. has missed only 1 game in 3 full seasons.

Details

Topps may have jinxed J.C. Tremblay by mentioning that he’d missed just one game over the past three seasons. Over the next three, 1964-65 to 1966-67, Tremblay was absent from 23 games.

Never a Lady Byng Trophy winner, J.C. indeed was rarely in the penalty box, especially for a blue liner. He never amassed more than 24 penalty minutes in a single NHL season. In 1962-63, he sat just 10 PIM over 69 games for the Montreal Canadiens.

Not one for putting the puck in the back of the net, Tremblay had just 57 goals over 794 regular season games in the National Hockey League. However, his passing ability was exceptional. In 1970-71, J.C. was in a four way tie for sixth place in the NHL for assists with 52. Also equaling that mark were Fred Stanfield, Jude Drouin and Bobby Hull.

The following year, 1971-72, Tremblay’s 51 assists put him in a three way tie for eighth in the NHL with John Bucyk and Pit Martin. Following that season, he took his playmaking ability to the World Hockey Association. Over 454 games in the WHA, J.C. accumulated 358 helpers.

J.C. Tremblay played 794 regular season and 108 playoff games in the NHL between 1959-60 and 1971-72, all with the Habs. He was a member of five Stanley Cup championship teams and was named to the First Team and Second Team All-Star teams once each.

In the WHA, he played 454 regular season and 34 playoff games between 1972-73 and 1978-79, all with the Quebec Nordiques. He led the league in assists in 1972-73 and 1975-76. Tremblay was named a WHA First Team All-Star three times and a Second Team All-Star once. He was inducted into the WHA Hall Of Fame in 2010.
