After two injury-plagued seasons, Ivan finally played all 78 games last year. He wound up as the second highest scorer on the Golden Seals. He’s a strong skater and a fine playmaker. His rugged style of play should fit right in with Chicago. Ivan was originally property of the Boston Bruins. He’s the only NHL player born in Yugoslavia. Chicago gave up two defensemen for Ivan.

The two defensemen Chicago gave up to get Ivan Boldirev from the California Golden Seals were Mike Christie and Len Frig. The trade occurred on May 23, 1974. Ivan was property of the Boston Bruins and did appear in a total of 13 games with the club over the 1970-71 and 1971-72 NHL seasons. The rest of his time was spent in the CHL with the Oklahoma City Blazers. He was traded from Boston to California for Rich Leduc and Chris Oddleifson.
With Chicago in 1974-75, he upped his career best point total to 67 from 56 with the Golden Seals the year before. It was the second season of six consecutive scoring at least 24 goals. His best season with the Hawks came in 1977-78 when he scored 35 goals and totaled 80 points. However, the following season, he was part of a blockbuster that sent him, Darcy Rota and Phil Russell to the Atlanta Flames for Tom Lysiak, Greg Fox, Harold Phillipoff, Pat Ribble and Miles Zaharko.
His time in Atlanta was short and by February 8, 1980, him, again along with Darcy Rota, were off to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Don Lever and Brad Smith. He helped the Canucks reach the Stanley Cup final in 1981-82 before losing to the New York Islanders.
Between 1970-71 and 1984-85, Ivan Boldirev appeared in 1,052 regular season and 48 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Bruins, Golden Seals, Blackhawks, Flames, Canucks and Detroit Red Wings. It was with the Wings in 1983-84 that Ivan had a career best 83 point season.
