Topps began producing National Hockey League collector’s cards for the 1954-55 season. Generally, in the early days, the company put out cards for the U.S. based teams while Parkhurst printed hockey cards for the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs. In the 1960’s, that split changed slightly with the Detroit Red Wings moving to Parkhurst and Topps producing cards for the New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins.
After Parkhurst ceased following the 1963-64 NHL season, Topps was the lone mainstream producer on the market. It was actually O-Pee-Chee that was producing the cards and in 1968-69, the two companies began releasing parallel sets. OPC tended to have more cards but the design was generally the same.
