1972-73 O-Pee-Chee Team Canada (Summit Series)

The 1972 Summit Series (aka Super Series) was an eight game exhibition competition between players from Canada and the Soviet Union. In the end, Canada won four games compared the the USSR’s three wins with one game ending in a tie. The first four games were played at venues in Canada while the final four were played at locations in Russia.

Just seven players from Canada played in all eight games: Phil Esposito, Paul Henderson, Bobby Clarke, Yvan Cournoyer, Brad Park, Gary Bergman and Ron Ellis. Esposito led the series in scoring with 13 points on seven goals and six assists. Paul Henderson also scored seven goals, including the series winning marker.

Alexander Yakushev led the Soviets with seven goals and eleven points over the full eight games. Vladislav Tretiak played all eight games between the pipes for Russia.

In net for Canada were Ken Dryden and Tony Esposito. Each saw action in four games with Esposito having the better numbers.

An interesting bit of trivia is that Bobby Clarke wore number 28 instead of his normal 16. Wearing 16, and obviously with seniority, was Rod Seiling. Another oddity when it came to numbers was Gilbert Perreault wearing number 33 instead of 11. Vic Hadfield wore the number that would eventually be retired by the Buffalo Sabres in honour of Perreault. However, both Gil and Vic appeared in just two games apiece in the Summit Series.
