Details
Harry Howell played just five games for the Guelph Biltmores in 1952-53 before finishing the season with the Rangers, appearing in his first 67 NHL games. He scored three goals from the blue line that year, his first came in his first NHL game.
On October 18, 1952 at Maple Leaf Gardens, Howell put one past Toronto goalie Harry Lumley at 5:21 of the second period on the power play, assisted by Paul Ronty. The goal put the Rangers up 2-0 but they would lose the game 4-3.
A slight error on the back of this 1962-63 Topps hockey card. In the French section, it states that he reached a career high for goals in 1961-62. In the English section, it’s a little more wishy-washy, saying he hit a scoring high. In 1961-62, Harry Howell did put up a career best (to that point) 21 points but his six goals were one less than the seven he put up on three previous occasions.
His best year offensively would come in 1966-67 when he scored 12 and totaled 40 points, earning the Norris Trophy that year as the NHL’s top defenseman. Howell’s highest assist total was 31 in 1963-64.
Of his six goals in 1961-62, three were against the Boston Bruins. The second of those three was scored on February 21, 1962 and was the game winner in a 4-2 victory at Madison Square Garden. Howell put one past Boston goalie Bruce Gamble at 16:57 of the third to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead. Pete Goegan and Andy Bathgate had helpers on that marker.
Between 1952-53 and 1972-73, Harry Howell played 1,411 regular season and 38 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Oakland Seals and Los Angeles Kings. Despite the length of his NHL career, Harry never advanced past the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Howell also appeared in 170 regular season and seven playoff games in the WHA between 1973-74 and 1975-76 with the New York Golden Blades/Jersey Knights, San Diego Mariners and Calgary Cowboys. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979.
