Details
Guy Charron’s numbers did improve for 1973-74 with 25 goals and 30 assists for 55 points while sitting just five minor penalties over 76 games. This probably should have got him some consideration for the Lady Byng Trophy but did not. In fact, the only time during his career he was on the list was in 1978-79 with the Washington Capitals when he received a single vote.
Charron came to the Detroit Red Wings through a January 13, 1971 trade with the Montreal Canadiens that also Bill Collins and Mickey Redmond go to Motown while Frank Mahovlich went in the other direction. It launched Guy’s career, having played just 20 games with the Habs over two seasons.
His time in junior with the Montreal Junior Canadiens was decent but what got Charron noticed was his performance with the AHL’s Montreal Voyageurs in 1969-70. His 37 goals tied him for third in the league with Norm Beaudin and teammate Jude Drouin. In overall scoring, his 82 points placed him sixth, 24 behind leader Drouin.
In the post season, the Voyageurs were bounced in the second round but Charron put up eight goals in eight games and led the team with 12 points. It was a strong team that also included Marc Tardif, Guy Lapointe, Rejean Houle, Pierre Bouchard and Dennis Hextall among others.
In that 1973-74 NHL season, Guy had a pair of hat tricks just a few weeks apart, his first two three goal games of his career. His first came on October 21, 1973 against the California Golden Seals in an 11-2 blowout. He put six shots on Seals goalie Gilles Meloche in the match. Charron’s second hat trick came on November 11, 1973 in a 5-4 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Guy scored the first three goals of the game.
Between 1969-70 and 1980-81, Guy Charron played 734 regular season games in the National Hokey League but never appeared in the post season. Along with the Canadiens and Red Wings, he also played for the Kansas City Scouts and Washington Capitals.
