Card Notes
Sidelined by injuries, Gump did not play steady last year, but Montreal thought enough of him to protect him in the NHL expansion draft.
Details
It’s a good thing Montreal did protect Gump Worsley in the NHL expansion draft. The goalie put up an incredible performance in 1967-68 and earned the Vezina Trophy. It was his second of two times winning the award. He shared the honour with Rogatien Vachon as the two spent equal time in the Montreal nets.
When it came to the post season that year, Worsley appeared in 12 of Montreal’s 13 games. The team captured the Stanley Cup championship, beating Boston and Chicago before sweeping the St. Louis Blues in the final.
Eventually, though, one of the 1967 expansion teams got ahold of Gump. On February 27, 1970 he was sold to the Minnesota North Stars. Worsley finished out his career with the North Stars, playing until the end of the 1973-74 NHL season.
