When big Chuck Rayner was benched because of damage to his legs, Lorne was brought up from Saskatoon in the PCHL and gave such a good account of himself in his first season with the big league, that he was awarded the Calder Trophy as the most outstanding rookie of the year.

Playing 50 of 70 games for the last place New York Rangers in 1952-53, Gump Worsley posted a 3.06 goals against average with two shutouts. He edged out Gord Hannigan of the Toronto Maple Leafs to earn the Calder Trophy.
Gump’s first NHL shutout was a big one. Hosting the much more powerful Montreal Canadiens at Madison Square Garden on January 11, 1953, Worsley stood tall in a 7-0 win for the home squad. Of course, much of his NHL success would come later in his career as a member of those Canadiens.
Despite his rookie of the year performance, Worsley did not play a single game for the Rangers in 1953-54. Instead, he was in the WHL playing every game for the Vancouver Canucks and leading them to the final before falling to the Calgary Stampeders. The Blue Shirts instead opted for Johnny Bower as their number one goalie. By the following year, though, Gump was back up with the club to stay.
Between 1952-53 and 1973-74, Gump Worsley appeared in 861 regular season and 70 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens and Minnesota North Stars. The two time Vezina Trophy winner helped the Habs to four Stanley Cup titles. Worsley was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1980.
