Card Notes
Perhaps, this is the only hockey card to reference the year Gordie Howe played for the Omaha Knights in the USHL. Between Junior hockey with the Galt Red Wings and Mr. Hockey’s lengthy NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings and Hartford Whalers, Howe played in a single season of minor pro hockey with the Knights. Gordie was third on the team in scoring and helped the Knights to a second place finish in the 1945-46 USHL.
The other item of note on this hockey card is that Howe is wearing the ‘A’ for the Houston Aeros in the photo on the front. If Gordie Howe wasn’t the team captain of a WHA team, then who the heck was?
That honour went to Ted Taylor. Taylor was with the Aeros for the duration, playing from 1972-73 to 1977-78 before retiring as a player. In all, he played in 420 regular season and 63 playoff games in the World Hockey Association, helping Houston to two Avco World Trophy championships. Ted saw 166 games in the NHL between 1964-65 and 1971-72 with the New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota North Stars and Vancouver Canucks.
