Details
Most of Gordie Howe’s NHL scoring records have been surpassed. However, when it comes to longevity, he remains the all-time leader in regular season games played with a single team, most combined NHL and WHA games played, most combined NHL and WHA goals scored, most seasons and most consecutive 20 goal seasons.
1967-68 marked an offensive renaissance in Howe’s NHL career. After diminished numbers in 1966-67, he surged back with 39 goals and 82 points in 67-68. This put him third in both goals and points, in both cases behind the Chicago duo of Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita. The following year, he upped the totals to 44 goals and a career high of 103 points.
Gordie remained with the Red Wings until the end of the 1970-71 season before retiring for the first time. He would return to major league hockey in 1973-74 for a six year career in the World Hockey Association, playing with his sons Marty and Mark Howe. His swansong was a full 80 game schedule with the Hartford Whalers in 1979-80.
Between 1946-47 and 1979-80, Gordie Howe appeared in 1,767 regular season and 157 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Red Wings and Whalers. Between 1973-74 and 1978-79, he played 419 regular season and 78 playoff games in the WHA with the Houston Aeros and New England Whalers. Howe entered the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.
