Card Notes
The 1962-63 Parkhurst NHL hockey cards were a little short on information. However, on the back of this Gordie Howe card, there is a very significant story being told in the numbers. Specifically, the number 502 when it came to Howe’s career National Hockey League goals.
Late in the 1961-62 NHL season, Gordie became only the second player in league history to score 500 goals. Maurice Richard had previously crossed the plateau during the 1957-58 season with the Montreal Canadiens.
Howe’s 500th came on March 14, 1962 in a game at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers. At 17:10 of the second period, Gordie scored a shorthanded goal on Gump Worsley with teammate Claude Laforge in the box for tripping. Assisting on the historic marker were Alex Delvecchio and Warren Godfrey. The Wings lost the game 3-2 with Howe assisted on the only other goal, scored by Laforge.
Howe would go on to score 801 goals over his NHL career. That mark now places him third all-time behind Wayne Gretzky and Alex Ovechkin.
