1956-57 brought Gordie Howe his fifth Art Ross Trophy win. He would take the award one more time, in 1962-63, for a career total of six. Only Wayne Gretzky has won the NHL scoring title more times with ten. Mario Lemieux was also a six time winner.
Howe’s record of 95 points in a season would only last a few more years. Dickie Moore of the Montreal Canadiens totaled 96 in 1958-59. Stan Mikita would move the record up to 97 in 1965-66 while Phil Esposito put up totals of 126 in 1968-69 and 152 in 1970-71 before Wayne Gretzky came along and blew everyone away. Gretzky’s 215 points in 1985-86 will most likely stand as the record for the lifetime of anyone reading this article.
Along with his scoring success, Gordie won his first of three consecutive Hart Trophies in 1956-57. he would end his career with six. Only Gretzky has won more with nine.
1957-58 would see a drop in production for Howe with a drop in games played. Gordie appeared in 64 of Detroit’s 70 regular season games, still putting up great numbers with 33 goals and 77 points. Howe had a five point night on February 22, 1958 in a 6-1 win over the Boston Bruins at Detroit Olympia. Gordie scored one and assisted on four. Three of the assists were on Jack McIntyre goals.
Between 1946-47 and 1979-80, Gordie Howe appeared in 1,767 regular season and 157 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings and Hartford Whalers. He helped the Wings to four Stanley Cup championships. Howe was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.
