Card Notes
Rugged is the word for Gilles. He is one of the NHL’s best bodycheckers, and he developed into an offensive threat as well last season. Gilles has also been used at left wing on occasion.
En Français
Gilles est un gars roubuste. Ses mises en échec sont redoutées et, l’an dernier, il fit du bon travail offensif. Gilles a aussi déjà joué à l’aile gauche.
Details
Gilles Marotte would remain with the Los Angeles Kings for just 22 games in 1973-74. On November 30, 1973, he was traded to the New York Rangers with Real Lemieux for Sheldon Kannegiesser, Mike Murphy and Tom Williams. He finished out the year, appearing in 46 regular season and 12 playoff games for the Blue Shirts.
Brought up in the Boston Bruins system, first playing junior hockey for the Victoriaville Bruins and Niagara Falls Flyers, Gilles left Beantown in a May 15, 1967 trade that sent him, along with Pit Martin and Jack Norris to Chicago for Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield. He would come together with Esposito on the New York Rangers in 1975-76.
The blue liner had his best years offensively with the Los Angeles Kings. In 1971-72, he had a career high ten goals. The following season, he put up career bests of 39 assists and 45 points.
Between 1965-66 and 1976-77, Marotte played in 808 regular season and 29 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues.
