Gary has become a favorite of the fans in Vancouver. He’s one of the tallest goalies in the National Hockey League, and he puts his size to good use. Gary is a standup type of goalie who plays the angles well and challenges oncoming shooters. He played for California, Chicago and Toronto before joining the Canucks at the start of the 1973-74 season.
Details
Gary Smith came over to the Vancouver Canucks from the Chicago Blackhawks in a May 14, 1973 trade. Also going to the Canucks was Jerry Korab. Going to Chicago was Dale Tallon.
Smith would play three full seasons as Vancouver’s number one goalie, putting up eleven shutouts during that time. On August 23, 1976 he was traded to the Minnesota North Stars in a goalie swap that saw Cesare Maniago go in the other direction.
Gary played 532 regular season NHL games between 1965-66 and 1979-80 with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Oakland Seals, Chicago Blackhawks, Vancouver Canucks, Minnesota North Stars, Washington Capitals and Winnipeg Jets. He also had a stint in the WHA with the Indianapolis Racers and the Winnipeg Jets.
