Despite injuries, Gary still managed his second straight 20-goal year last season. He came up through the Boston chain and was just 19 when he played his first NHL game during the 1963-64 season.

Indeed, 20 goals in just 57 games for the Philadelphia Flyers in 1970-71 for Gary Dornhoefer was pretty impressive. Over his career, he had five season with 20 or more goals. Dornhoefer’s personal best was 30 in 1972-73 when also put up a career high 79 points.
His rookie season in 1963-64 was also pretty impressive. Gary played just 32 of Boston’s 70 games that year, yet finished fourth in voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year. He started the year in the CPHL with the Minneapolis Bruins and joined the Bruins for the team’s 38th game of the year on January 9, 1964.
Over his first nine games with the Bruins, Dornhoefer contributed ten points, including a pair of two goal games. His first NHL goals were scored in a January 16, 1964 game against the Detroit Red Wings at Boston Garden. Gary scored both with the man advantage on Detroit goalie Roger Crozier and both were assisted by Murray Oliver.
Between 1963-64 and 1977-78, Gary Dornhoefer played 787 regular season and 80 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers. He was a big part of Philadelphia’s back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 1973-74 and 1974-75.
