Garry Unger’s iron man streak would end during the 1979-80 NHL season at 914 games. At the time, it was an NHL record. Today, Unger’s streak is the fifth most in league history. Phil Kessel now owns the mark at 1,064 consecutive games played.

Just prior to the 1979-80 campaign, Unger was traded from the St. Louis Blues to the Atlanta Flames on October 10, 1979 for Ed Kea, Don Laurence and a draft pick. His time with the Flames was limited to that season and he was off to the Los Angeles Kings for the start of 1980-81.

The highlight of his time with Atlanta was scoring four goals in a 4-3 win over the Quebec Nordiques. On January 11, 1980, he put four pucks past Quebec goalie Michel Dion while accounting for nine of the 40 shots on goal for the Flames. Pat Riggin made 32 saves on 35 shots for the win.

Between 1967-68 and 1982-83, Garry Unger played 1,105 regular season and 51 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, Atlanta Flames, Los Angeles Kings and Edmonton Oilers. Unger scored 30 or more goals in nine seasons, topping out with a career best 42 in 1969-70 with the Red Wings.
