Card Notes

“Garry is the type of player you can build a team around”, claimed St. Louis when they traded for him last season. A smooth-skating, blond center Garry recovered from back injury at start of 1970-71. Originally a Toronto product, he has always been a fan favourite.

“Garry est le genre de joueur qui peut servir de base pour tout une équipe”, selon les dirigeants de St-Louis. Garry se remit d’une blessure au dos au début de la saison 1970-71. D’abord avec les Maple Leafs. Toujours populaire auprès des spectateurs.

Details

This 1971-72 O-Pee-Chee Garry Unger hockey card is considered an uncorrected error card. On the front, and twice on the back, his first name is spelt correctly. However, on the right side of the back of the card, Garry is twice misspelt Gary. Wearing the Detroit colours with the logo blanked out on the front isn’t an error but it’s sure an oddity.

Unger came to the St. Louis Blues midway through the 1970-71 season in a February 5, 1971 trade with the Detroit Red Wings. Wayne Connelly also went to the Blues while Red Berenson and Tim Ecclestone went to the Motor City. The difference between the two team’s schedules meant Garry was able to get an extra game in, playing 79 over the 78 game season.

He would never top the 42 goals he scored with Detroit in 1969-70 but 1971-72 began a string of eight consecutive campaigns scoring at least 30. He came close to his personal best, leading St. Louis with 41 markers in 1972-73, nearly double that of any other player on the roster. That total place him in a three way tie for sixth in the NHL with Jean Ratelle and Jim Pappin.

Between 1967-68 and 1982-83, Garry Unger played 1,105 regular season and 51 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, Atlanta Flames, Los Angeles Kings and Edmonton Oilers.
