Details
The 204 penalty minutes without a misconduct occurred during Garry Howatt’s rookie NHL season in 1973-74. He sat 204 minutes while playing the full 78 game schedule for the Islanders without being assessed anything more than a five minute major.
Always high in penalty numbers, Garry topped out with 242 during the 1981-82 season as a member of the Hartford Whalers. It was his first year with the club after being traded in the off-season from the Islanders. He led the team in that category while also contributing a decent 18 goals and 50 points while playing in all 80 games for the Whalers. The points and assists were career highs while the 18 goals were just behind his career best of 21 in 1975-76.
That year with the Whalers was his last full season and his only campaign in Hartford. On October 15, 1982, Howatt was traded to the New Jersey Devils with Rick Meagher for Merlin Malinowski and Scott Fusco and his NHL career fizzled from there.
A tenth round pick by the Islanders in 1972, Garry Howatt went on to play 720 regular season and 87 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1972-73 and 1983-84 with the New York Islanders, Hartford Whalers and New Jersey Devils. He won two Stanley Cup championships while on Long Island.
