Card Notes

Although the 1963-64 regular season wasn’t the greatest for Frank Mahovlich with his goal production dropping by ten from the year before, Mahovlich powered the Toronto Maple Leafs to a third consecutive Stanley Cup championship.

Mahovlich led the Maple Leafs with 15 points in 14 playoff games. Toronto took out the Detroit Red Wings in seven games in the final. Both teams had to also go the full seven game distance in eliminating their opening round opponents. Detroit’s Gordie Howe and Norm Ullman both outscored Frank in the playoffs in the losing cause.

Frank’s offensive production would continue to be a bit sub-par with Toronto over the coming seasons. However, after a March 3, 1968 trade sent him, Carl Brewer, Pete Stemkowski and Garry Unger to the Detroit Red Wings for Doug Barrie, Paul Henderson, Floyd Smith and Norm Ullman, Mahovlich’s stick had a revival.

In 1968-69 with the Red Wings, Frank put 49 pucks in the net for a career high. That number tied him for second in the league with Phil Esposito of the Boston Bruins. Leading the way that year was Bobby Hull of the Chicago Blackhawks with an at the time record of 58 goals.

In all, Mahovlich scored 533 goals in 1,181 regular season National Hockey League games between 1956-57 and 1973-74 with the Maple Leafs, Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens. He would score another 51 in 137 playoff games. Frank’s career ended with four seasons in the WHA with the Toronto Toros and Birmingham Bulls.
