Card Notes
“Busher” Curry is one of those players who go on year after year doing a sound, workmanlike job, but never catching the headlines. He has been patrolling right wing for the Habs for seven seasons now, much of the time when the team was shorthanded. He really came into his own during the Stanley Cup playoffs when he filled in for Rocket Richard. His playmaking and point scoring were a big factor in Montreal’s epic struggle.
Details
Floyd Curry would have one of his best seasons offensively with the Montreal Canadiens in 1955-56 but the numbers dropped drastically after that and he was gone from the NHL after the 1957-58 season. In 1955-56, he scored 14 and assisted on 18 for 32 points over 70 games. This was just off his career best 20 goals, 18 assists and 38 points that he put up in 1951-52.
To go with those 32 points, Curry was assessed just five minor penalties. He was runner-up in voting for the Lady Byng Trophy, behind winner Dutch Reibel of the Detroit Red Wings. On two other occasions, he was in the running for the Byng, finishing fifth both times.
A standout penalty killer, Floyd had 12 shorthanded goals over his career, accounting for more than 10% of his 105 total. He led the league in 1954-55 with three and had two in 1955-56. His shorthanded marker on March 18, 1956 against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden was also the game winning goal in a 3-1 victory for the Habs. The goal was scored unassisted at 15:39 of the first period on New York goalie Gump Worsley.
Between 1947-48 and 1957-58, Floyd Curry played 601 regular season and 91 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Montreal Canadiens. He was a four time Stanley Cup winner with the Habs. In the 1954-55 playoff run, he had eight goals and 12 points over 12 games with the Canadiens losing to the Detroit Red Wings in the final.
