Ed serves as captain of the Islanders, and is the team’s most experienced player. A truly dependable performer, Ed is used whenever the going gets tough. He is one of the top checking forwards in the NHL and is also a top penalty killer. Six of Ed’s goals last season came on the power play. Ed will play his 900th NHL game this season.
Details
Ed Westfall was the original captain of the New York Islanders from the start of their inaugural 1972-73 NHL season until Clark Gillies took over for the 1977-78 season. Westfall was the fifth player picked in the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft and the ninth overall, taken from the Boston Bruins.
By the time he retired after the 1978-79 National Hockey League season, Ed had appeared in 1,226 regular season and 95 playoff games with the Bruins and Islanders. He played his first NHL games in 1961-62 with Boston.
Westfall got to play with two Stanley Cup champions in Boston. However, he missed out on the New York Islanders dynasty of four consecutive wins which started the year after his retirement.
