The Capitals acquired Doug’s services in a summer trade with the Atlanta Flames. His long and distinguished career in the NHL has included stops in Boston, Chicago, Minnesota and Atlanta. One of the smoothest skaters in hockey, Doug is used mostly on defense nowadays, although he spent considerable time as a forward. He’s starting his 22nd NHL campaign.

After playing just 28 games for the Atlanta Flames in 1973-74, Doug Mohns came back strong for his final year in the NHL. He served as team captain for the Capitals and appeared in 75 of the team’s 80 games. Diesel scored just two goals on the campaign, including the final goal of his lengthy NHL career. On March 28, 1975, he scored the first goal of the game in a 5-3 win over the California Golden Seals. It was just the seventh of eight wins for the Caps in their inaugural season.
With a career split between defense and forward, Mohns managed five seasons with at least 20 goals. Four were in consecutive campaigns with the Blackhawks when he was on a line with Stan Mikita and Ken Wharram. His career best came in 1966-67 when his 25 goals placed him in a four-way tie for seventh in the NHL with Gordie Howe, Dennis Hull and Yvan Cournoyer.
Between 1953-54 and 1974-75, Doug Mohns played 1,389 regular season and 94 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota North Stars, Atlanta Flames and Washington Capitals. Never a Stanley Cup champion, he did go to the final twice with the Bruins and once with the Blackhawks.
