The 1956-57 season was in many respects, another big year in Doug Harvey’s NHL career. Selected as winner of the Norris Trophy for the third year and to the First All-Star Team for the sixth straight year, he also broke his own record for most assists by a defenseman in a season, scoring 44. It is interesting to note that never before in the history of the All Stars, has any defenseman made the First Team six consecutive years.

Doug Harvey would be an All-Star defenseman in eleven consecutive NHL seasons. He first seven and last three were First Team selections with a Second Team nod in 1958-59. Along with that, he was a seven time Norris Trophy winner and six time Stanley Cup champion.

In 1957-58, he scored a career high nine goals for the Montreal Canadiens. Amazingly, five of those nine were game winners. In the playoffs, he led the Habs with nine assists in ten games. His eleven points tied him for third on the team, four behind leader Maurice Richard.

One of those game winners came during a two goal performance for the blue liner in a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers on December 29, 1957 at Madison Square Garden. Harvey scored his second of the game and fifth of the 1957-58 NHL season at 3:38 of the third on Rangers goalie Marcel Paille, assisted by Dickie Moore and Henri Richard to give the Habs a 4-1 lead.

Between 1947-48 and 1968-69, Doug Harvey played 1,113 regular season and 137 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Canadiens, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues. Harvey was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1973.
