Card Notes
It doesn’t say on the card but the stats on the back of this Don Simmons 1965-66 Topps hockey card are not from the NHL. Simmons put up the numbers in the CPHL in 1964-65 with the Tulsa Oilers. He played all but one of Tulsa’s regular season games. Future NHLer Gary Smith played a single game for the team.
The Ruday Migay coached Oilers finished fourth in the six team league. However, they reached the final before falling to the Fred Shero coached St. Paul Rangers. Simmons played all 12 playoff games that year for Tulsa.
Don played 11 games for the New York Rangers during the 1965-66 season in a backup role behind Ed Giacomin and Cesare Maniago. He would appear in five games in each of the 1967-68 and 1968-69 NHL seasons with the Rangers, his last games in the league. In all, Simmons played 248 games in the NHL between 1956-57 and 1968-69 with the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Rangers.
This would be the last hockey card featuring Don Simmons during his playing career.
