Audio Version:
Don is considered to be one of the toughest players in the National Hockey League. He’s a policeman type who is always on hand when the going gets tough. After two years of seasoning in the American Hockey League, he latched on with the Flyers, and now is a regular. Last season, he even became a scorer, especially in the Stanley Cup playoffs, when he notched a pair of goals and seven assists for nine points.
Details
Don Saleski was a sixth round pick by the Philadelphia Flyers at the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft after a journeyman junior career that saw him play for the Regina Pats, Winnipeg Jets and Saskatoon Blades. He spent time in the AHL with the Quebec Aces and Richmond Robins before becoming a regular with the Flyers in 1972-73.
In the opening series for the Flyers in the 1973-74 playoffs, Saleski played a prominent role in a game three 4-1 win over the Atlanta Flames. Don scored the opening goal, assisted by Orest Kindrachuk. He then assisted on the final goal, scored by Bill Barber early in the third. Of course, the Flyers went on to sweep Atlanta before taking out the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins to capture the Stanley Cup championship.
Definitely a role player, Saleski could also put the puck in the net. He had three years surpassing the 20 goal plateau in Philadelphia. He topped out with 27 in 1977-78 while appearing in just 70 games.
Between 1971-72 and 1979-80, Don Saleski played in 543 regular season and 82 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Flyers and Colorado Rockies. In his rookie year with Philadelphia, his 205 penalty minutes placed him fifth in the NHL, 54 minutes behind league leader and teammate Dave Schultz.
