Details
Those 16 playoff games Dennis Maruk played for the Minnesota North Stars in 1983-84 would account for nearly half of his 34 career post season games in the NHL. The Stars took out the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues before being swept by the Edmonton Oilers in the semi-final.
In the round one series clinching game 5 against the Blackhawks, Maruk scored shorthanded at 2:50 of the first period on Murray Bannerman. The goal was assisted by Brian Bellows and Gordie Roberts while Keith Acton was in the box for charging. Dennis also scored into the empty net to make the final score 4-1.
His most impressive playoff performance came two years later. In 1985-86, despite the North Stars not advancing past the Blues in the opening round, Maruk had 13 points in five games. In a game two 6-2 win, he had two goals and two assists for four points and was a +5.
Between 1975-76 and 1988-89, Dennis Maruk played 888 regular season and 34 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the California Golden Seals, Cleveland Barons, Minnesota North Stars and Washington Capitals. He is, of course, the first Capital to score 50 and 60 goals in a season.
