Details

1957-58 was a setback for Dean Prentice. A fractured hand limited him to 38 regular season and six playoff games for the New York Rangers. He did seem to recover well, scoring four goals in a five game late season return to the team. In a March 22, 1958 7-0 win over Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens, Dean had two goals and an assist for three points.

In that match, he scored his 12th and 13th of the 1957-58 NHL season on Toronto goalie Ed Chadwick. He also assisted on the opening goal of the game by Hank Ciesla, the game winner. It was Gump Worsley earning the 31 save shutout for New York.

Despite playing just 38 games, Prentice got some consideration for the Lady Byng Trophy. He finished fourth in voting, a distance behind winner and teammate Camille Henry. Don Marshall, Don McKenney and Henri Richard were also in the running.

In the 1958 Stanley Cup playoffs, Dean contributed a goal and three assists over six games as the Rangers fell to the Boston Bruins in the semi-final. In a game 4 5-2 win at Boston Garden, Prentice scored a shorthanded goal on Boston goalie Don Simmons to open the scoring. That marker was assisted by Andy Bathgate and scored while Lou Fontinato was in the penalty box.

Dean Prentice played 1,378 regular season and 54 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1952-53 and 1973-74 with the New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota North Stars. He scored a career high 32 goals in 1959-60, leading the last place Rangers and finishing fourth in the NHL, seven behind leader Bobby Hull.
