En Français

Dave a été surnommé “Le Tigre” à cause de son agressivité. Joueur le plus pénalisé de la LNH à trois reprises (1976-77, 1978-79 et 1980-81).

Details

Those three years mentioned would remain the only times Tiger Williams led the NHL in penalty minutes, the first two with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the third with the Vancouver Canucks. He followed up with 341 PIM in 1981-82, just a minor penalty less than is league leading 343 in 1980-81. However, he finished second, a distance behind Paul Baxter of the Penguins and his 409 PIM.

Of course, his 1980-81 NHL season was special, becoming the first of just two players (along with Al Secord) to score more than 30 goals and sit more than 300 minutes in a single season. That year, he had eight two-goal games on his way to 35 for the season.

What got him there was on full display in a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on February 24, 1981 at the Pacific Coliseum. Williams scored two goals and assisted on a Bobby Schmautz goal for a three point game. Dave also had ten minutes in penalties but did not achieve the Gordie Howe Hat Trick. The 10 PIM were on five minor penalties.

Tiger did put up one GHHT that year. In a 3-2 home loss to the St. Louis Blues on December 28, 1980, Williams scored the first goal of the game, assisted by Rick Lanz and Per-Olav Brasar and assisted on a goal by Brasar. He also had a third period fight with Wayne Babych.

Between 1974-75 and 1987-88, Dave “Tiger” Williams played 962 regular season and 83 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and Hartford Whalers. He remains the all-time leader for PIM with 3,971, over 400 more than second place Dale Hunter.
