Details
Dave Taylor, the 15th round pick that went on to play over 1,000 games in the NHL. Taylor went 210th to the Los Angeles Kings at the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft after four years of collegiate hockey with Clarkson University.
Despite his 22 goals and 43 points over just 64 games in 1977-78, Taylor was passed over for Calder Trophy consideration as NHL rookie of the year. The award went to Mike Bossy of the New York Islanders by a wide margin of votes.
His rookie season was the start of a nine year run scoring 20 or more goals. Over that time, he surpassed 40 goals on three occasions. Taylor topped out with 47 goals in 1980-81. That year, his 112 points placed him fifth in the race for the Art Ross Trophy, a distant 52 behind leader Wayne Gretzky. He was named a Second Team All-Star at left wing.
Between 1977-78 and 1993-94, Dave Taylor played in 1,111 regular season and 92 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Los Angeles Kings. He served as team captain for the Kings from 1985-86 to 1988-89. He replaced Terry Ruskowski in the position and was replaced by Wayne Gretzky.
