Details
This back of this card was a little behind the times. True, Dave Schultz set an American Hockey League record in 1970-71 with 382 penalty minutes playing for the Quebec Aces. However, he broke his own record the following year, sitting 392 PIM with the Richmond Robins.
That AHL record was utterly shattered in 2004-05. Brian McGrattan of the Binghamton Senators incurred a massive 551 PIM in 71 games. McGrattan sat an incredible 1,051 minutes during his three years with Binghamton.
Dave Schultz would go on to lead the National Hockey League in penalty minutes four times over his career. His record of 472 PIM set in 1974-75 still stands today. Dave played 535 regular season and 73 playoff games in the NHL between 1971-72 and 1979-80 with the Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres.
