Card Notes
CHICAGO, Feb. 26 – Center Darryl Sittler of the Toronto Maple Leafs extended his goal scoring streak to nine straight games tonight with a pair of goals during a 5-3 Toronto victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. The goals, Sittler’s 36th and 37th of the season, came in the second and third periods against Chicago goalie Tony Esposito. The nine game scoring feat leaves Sittler one game short of the modern NHL record of 10 straight scoring games shared by Bobby Hull and Andy Bathgate.
The Details
It’s important to note that this is a “1977-78 Highlights” card and not a record breaker. The card doesn’t state that the scoring streak ended after that game. The next game for the Buds was February 28, 1978 at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum against the New York Islanders. The Leafs lost the game 4-3 and Darryl didn’t bulge the twine. However, he did assist on the team’s third goal, scored by Ron Ellis, his second of the game.
The modern day record was set during the 1979-80 season. Charlie Simmer of the Los Angeles Kings went 13 straight games with a goal that year. That mark has not been beaten. The actual record is 16 games, set during the 1921-22 season by Punch Broadbent of the Ottawa Senators. However, the game played back then was vastly different from that played from the Original 6 era moving forward.
It should be noted that Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins had 12 and 11 game goal scoring streaks during the 1992-93 season. Also, the father-son duo of Brett and Bobby Hull each had 10 game streaks with Brett accomplishing that twice. What about Wayne Gretzky? The Great One is tied with Sittler with a career best nine game streak.
