Details
Darryl Sittler’s ten point game against the Boston Bruins on February 7, 1976 still stands today as an untouchable National Hockey League record. No one has even put up a nine point game while eight in a single match has been accomplished just 13 times. The last player with an eight point game was Sam Gagner of the Edmonton Oilers in 2012.
Sittler took over as team captain with the Maple Leafs at the start of the 1975-76 season after Dave Keon left for the WHA. He remained captain until he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers midway through the 1981-82 NHL season.
For the 1976-77 season, Darryl’s offensive numbers dropped slightly during the regular season. However, in the post season he did all he could for the Maple Leafs. In nine games, he totaled 21 points with five goals and 16 assists. After taking out the Pittsburgh Penguins in the best of three preliminary round, the Leafs had a battle with the Philadelphia Flyers in the quarter-final. The Buds fell in six games after winning the first two and losing games three and four in overtime.
Between 1970-71 and 1984-85, Darryl Sittler appeared in 1,096 regular season and 76 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989.
