Details
Darryl Sittler came back from his wrist injury and appeared in all but four games for the Toronto Maple Leafs in his sophomore 1971-72 NHL season. Despite the increase in games played, his goal production only increased to 15 from ten in his injury shortened rookie campaign.
Three of his 15 goals, his 10th, 11th and 12th, in 1971-72 came on the night of February 19, 1972 in a 4-1 win at home against the Buffalo Sabres. Paul Henderson and Rick Martin traded first period goals then it was all Sittler from there. He scored what would be the winning goal on Buffalo goalie Roger Crozier at 14:53 of the first, assisted by Rick Kehoe and Jim Harrison. That pair would also assist on Sittler’s next two goals for three point nights of their own.
Between 1970-71 and 1984-85, Darryl Sittler played 1,096 regular season and 76 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989 and his jersey number 27 was retired by the Buds in 2016 (shared with Frank Mahovlich), although it had been “honoured” by the team since 2003.
