Card Notes

Darcy was the first round selection by the Black Hawks in the 1973 Amateur Draft, and he made the jump right into the National Hockey League without the benefit of minor league experience. Quick and elusive, he’s got a good shot and is very effective around the net. Five of his goals last season came on the power play. With a season of experience under his belt, Darcy could hit the 30-goal plateau this year.

Details

Darcy Rota did not hit the 30 goal plateau in 1974-75 with the Chicago Blackhawks. However, he did improve by a goal to 22. The 30 goal mark would elude Rota until 1982-83, his second last season in the NHL, when he scored 42 for the Vancouver Canucks.

Early in 1974-75, Darcy scored the first of his eight career NHL hat tricks. On October 27, 1974, the Blackhawks hosted the St. Louis Blues at the Chicago Stadium and did not treat their guests well. In a 10-3 Chicago win, Rota scored his second, third and fourth goals of the season while putting seven shots on St. Louis goalie John Davidson. He also assisted on a Grant Mulvey goal for a four point game.

His time in Chicago came to an end on March 13, 1979 when he was traded to the Atlanta Flames with Ivan Boldirev and Phil Russell for Greg Fox, Tom Lysiak, Harold Phillipoff, Pat Ribble and Miles Zaharko. The following year, Rota and Boldirev were on the move again, this time to Darcy’s hometown Vancouver Canucks for Don Lever and Brad Smith.

Between 1973-74 and 1983-84, Darcy Rota played 794 regular season and 60 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Blackhawks, Flames and Canucks. He was originally the 13th overall pick at the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft after a junior career with the Edmonton Oil Kings.
